Asterceae Family    -   Deer Resistant   -   Originated in North America

Great ground cover or border.  Nice cut  flower for arrangements.

Blooms are bi-color with red centres and yellow tips. Each flowers last about 4 weeks.

The Gaillardia flowers will bloom contiuously from June to September if dead headed.

Also known as x grandilora Kobold.  Resembles a firewheel or Native American Blanket.

Centre of the flower is like a disk or button and are very Daisy like.

Gaillardia does well in hot conditions and is drought tolerant.

Prefers well drained soil and does just fine in poor soil.

Easy to grow from seed. Plant seeds in early Spring or Summer anytime right up until 2 months before the first fall frost.

Gaillardia reseeds itself and may also be divided  in the Spring or Fall.

I consider the Harvest of  Gaillardia seeds as simple to do.

  1. Just testing this out.
Is this the one I really like?

  2. Thanks so much! I was having trouble determining which was the actual seed. I even took the heads in various stages to the local nursery and they said the the larger part was the seed, which I now know is chaff.

I will keep you bookmarked forever. You have done a fantastic job with all of the pictures in various stages. I often have to search to find out what a seedling looks like so I don’t accidentally pull it as a weed. Again, I thank you!

    • Hi dancingfatcat

Thanks so much for visiting my website and for your great comments. Comments like yours make me feel my time spent is well worth it and not a waste of time.

  3. You are my hero! Was having the same problem as dancingfatcat regarding what and where the seed for the goblin daisy is. My son and I adore these flowers. We are wanting to make them the continuous theme through-out all of our gardens. Can you tell us how to harvest the seeds for next spring? We have so many we are going ahead and scattering them in prepared soil before mulching for the winter but we want to be safe and have some just in case they don’t wake up happy.

My son is 10 and LOVES your site. Thank you again for all your help- especially in helping sprout my sprout.

    • Hi Laura and Son

Sorry to take so long to get back to you. I was doing a test on the seeds. It took about 10 days for the seeds to germinate in a little plastic baggie. Only 2 of the 5 germinated. The plant seems to pop up on it’s own in my flower beds so some of the seeds you scattered should grow okay.

I think the seeds are ready to harvest when they started popping out the seed head.
Last spring I tried growing them indoors in a seed starting mix and had no success.

I have about 40 or 50 more Flower, seedling and seed pictures to post on my website and will try to get it done soon.

That’s great your Son shares gardening with you. I have a grown Daughter that enjoys gardening with me and photographing flower in our City Parks. It’s a special outing for us.

Thanks for visiting and good luck with your Gaillardia!

  6. Are you saying that I need the seed head to stay on the plant until it looks like the photo? Or can I deadhead and let the spent blossom dry out and retrieve the seeds then. I have a Arizona sun that I love because It only gets about 1 foot in Height which is perfect for where I planted it. Your site is great. I researched for over an hour before I came to your sight with a picture of the seeds. Very helpful. Thanks, Robyn

  7. Howdy! This is my first comment here so I just wanted to give a quick shout out
and tell you I truly enjoy reading through your blog posts.
Can you suggest any other blogs/websites/forums that deal with the same subjects?
    Thanks a ton!

  8. Have you ever thought about including a little bit more than just
your articles? I mean, what you say is valuable and everything.
But just imagine if you added some great images or video clips to give your posts
more, “pop”! Your content is excellent but with pics and video clips, this blog could certainly be one of the very best in its niche.
    Excellent blog!
